What is Sedation Dentistry?

The thought of visiting a dentist can be daunting for some, but for others it can be a true clinical phobia. Here at Modern Smile Dentistry, we strive to provide nothing but the best service with a calm and comfortable environment, but we understand there are limitations. One great option for patients who suffer from anxiety and fears of the dentist is sedation dentistry. With the incorporation of conscious sedation, we strive to make you as comfortable as possible in the dentist chair during your procedure(s). There are many options to serve you as well as pain management tools for optimal comfort during these procedures. While dental sedation is available for patients, not every patient will be a candidate for sedation. Please consult Dr. Nima Mashhoon regarding dental sedation and what is best for you.

What Types of Sedations are Used in Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is a wonderful tool in the discipline of dentistry to allow for a more comfortable and relaxing environment. Nitrous Oxide

This is commonly known as laughing gas. This form of sedation is delivered via inhalation as it is a gas and is breathed in via a mask or nosepiece. This form of sedation allows for comfort and ease roughly 3-5 minutes after your first inhalation. Your dentist will control the level of sedation based on case by case. Once the procedure is over, you will receive pure oxygen to bring you back to a baseline state. Most patients will be able to drive themselves home after being sedated by nitrous oxide, however, if you feel as though you may not, please schedule a ride to take you home after the procedure. A consultation and evaluation will be warranted before administration of nitrous oxide to determine it is right for you.

Oral Conscious Sedation

This form of sedation is commonly achieved by a pill that is prescribed to you by Dr. Nima Mashhoon or your physician, to take one hour before your treatment. In pediatric scenarios, a liquid solution can be prescribed for better acceptance by the patient. The different kinds of medications will vary from case by case and person by person. We will prescribe what is best for you after the consulation and evaluation.

Patients who are sedated under this method tend to feel a groggy sensation and may even fall asleep being that they are in a comfortable state of mind. With that said, you will be able to be awaken by verbal commands or a gentle physical nudges if dental commands are warranted for treatment purposes. Being that this method makes you groggy and everyone responds a little different to this medication, a family member or legal guardian is needed to drive you home after the procedure.

Intravenous (IV) Sedation

This form of sedation is the deepest of conscious sedation that is available in a dental office. This method is performed by your dentist administering medication intravenously straight into your bloodstream. Your dentist will monitor all your vital signs including your heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen saturation levels. Doses can be adjusted and the medication can be reversed at any time. Most people who receive IV sedation tend to fall asleep with minimal to no memory of the procedure. This option is best for people with anxiety and phobias who will undergo a lengthy procedure.
