Teeth Whitening is an Effective Solution to Stains

Teeth whitening (bleaching) is a very simple and non-invasive way to enhance ones’ smile or to help remove old and stubborn stains. Bleaching has been performed for many years and has shown to be safe when performed as directed. There are two different ways teeth whitening can be accomplished. One method is the in-office method and the other is the in-home method. Both will further be discussed. Please note, if bleaching of teeth is desired, it is highly recommended that it be performed before any restoration, like veneers or implants, to allow for better cosmetic matching of the natural teeth to your new restorations.

Here the patient will have a preliminary consultation (preferably during the comprehensive exam), where bleaching will be discussed and the preliminary shade (color) of your teeth will be documented. During the bleaching treatment, patients will be advised to dress in very comfortable clothes and bring headphones as a form of entertainment. The procedure takes roughly 1 hour to complete. Patient will be advised to have brushed and flossed before arrival.

All the necessary steps will then be taken and the teeth will be prepared for the procedure. The patient will then be prepared and multiple applications will be applied. The use of a special light will enhance the bleaching process. Being that sensitivity may occur during treatment, it is advised patients take over the counter (OTC) Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen with food and plenty of water 1 hour before arrival. Custom trays will then be fabricated and given to the patient as so they may maintain their new whiter smile at home. Post-operative instructions will be given to the patient after treatment.

Limitations to Teeth Whitening

While bleaching is a wonderful way to enhance your smile via color change of the teeth, there are limits on how white one’s teeth can become. A consultation before performing will be important to go over procedure and expected results. Bleaching will only enhance the look and color of natural Teeth with crown, fillings, bonding or any other dental treatments will not change color. Bleaching is a wonderful way to change teeth color, however, this is not recommended for children and teens due to their development years. Sensitivity may occur after treatment. This is temporary and will alleviate with time.
